Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump are holding their third meeting since the President returned to office in January. Trump had already announced last week a 60 day ceasefire which he said was up to both Israel and Hamas to implement on the ground. Israel and Hamas have cautiously welcomed the ceasefire but both sides are holding close to their chest what their respective priorities are. For Israel, it is about rescuing the remaining hostages. For Hamas, it is about a complete cessation of hostilities, which Israel is reluctant to concede. Israel fears Hamas will use the pause only to regroup and attack again. But the bigger concern for Israel is what comes next in Gaza. Hamas, has been massively weakened, but not to the point that it will give up power in the coastal strip. Israel’s failure has also been that it has failed to imagine a possible political successor to Hamas which can fill the political and governance vacuum in a post war Gaza. n18oc_world n18oc_crux
