Hamas announced on Friday, July 4th, that it had given a “positive” response to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal and is ready to begin talks on how to implement the deal. The 60-day ceasefire plan, put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump, aims to bring an end to the nearly 21-month war between Israel and Hamas and includes the release of hostages and steps toward a lasting resolution. Hamas said it had completed internal discussions as well as talks with other Palestinian factions, and delivered its response to the mediators, Egypt and Qatar. While Hamas expressed willingness to begin negotiations immediately, a Palestinian official from an allied group warned that concerns remain over the flow of humanitarian aid, the use of the Rafah crossing into Egypt, and the timeline for Israeli troop withdrawal—issues that could still complicate the deal.
